Gameplay, Randomness, sound and Music
Hi all!
So what am I working on for SnakeEscape64?
The biggest two things maybe music and gameplay.
So let's start with the music. Someone offered to make music for this game, and I said yes. It is the first time I have music in any Commodore 64 game, so I am excited about this. Will it be in game music, or only title music, I cannot say yet. The next update "may" contain music.
Next is game-play. As you know this is a clone of B3 Snake Escape. But I haven't fully implemented all game play elements. So I am working on this now. There is the ever down-counting timer for starters. After that, there is the diet pill, which will make the snake shorter again.
As well I had someone in the comments suggesting to make it mandatory to eat all stars, to get the key. I will play with this idea as well. On top of this I have more gameplay ideas, which I will first test out, before I reveal them.
Then I had a small adventure with randomness. I used the sid randomness to create random numbers, only to find out, Vice made them less random. So I implemented a custom random routine, only to find out that KickC had one built in. Anyway, the good new is that when not using the sid randomness, I have less audio artifacts to try and hide.
Also I am tweaking the graphics all the time. On of my goals is to stay Hires, and not go for lores multicolor.
So for example, the 100 points sprite was using 4 sprites, in order to stay hires, yet have multi color. But since it flickered and disappeared very quickly, I decided it was a waste of so many sprites, so I cut that in half, and will use the two now free sprite to spiff up some other graphics elements. I'll keep tweaking, until I find the right look.
So far for this update.
Have a great saturday!
